Time: June 24-July 10, hours vary
The Alameda County Fair in San Francisco is a big and beefy family event – games, food, music and nonstop exhibits covering baking, crafts, livestock and technology. Special attractions include the Action Zone, an interactive sports and fitness expo, as well as wine and karaoke contests and an “American Idol”-style talent show.
Enjoy the annual fair parade June 25, and root your favorite on at the daily horse races. The carnival portion of the fair features a special Kids Park, with rides like Bigfoot Trucks and Jumping Jumbos.
There also will be traditional midway-style games. Bigger kids (and brave adults) will want to climb aboard such thrill rides as Crazy Train, Wave Swinger and Whirlwind.
Live music will also be featured, and the lineup of stars includes the Charlie Daniels Band, June 24; the Village People, June 25; Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop, June 27; Jose Feliciano, June 29; and Rita Coolidge, July 6.
