 Autumn Moon Festival

San Francisco Autumn Moon Festival opens up historic Grant Avenue in Chinatown, morphing it into a pedestrian-only area that welcomes visitors to a family celebration significant on the Chinese lunar calendar.

Stages throughout the area will feature a wide variety of live entertainment, including Asian-themed dancers and drummers.

Also appearing are traditional and contemporary musicians, including Chinese opera, martial artists, magicians, and an acrobatic troupe.

Held in Asia for more than 1,000 years, Moon Festivals are relatively new in our country, and provide a time to reflect on the bounty of the summer harvest and the myth of the immortal moon goddess who lives there. The event is sort of like Thanksgiving because of its spirit of generosity and its abundant food.

A special treat is the moon cake—a flaky, round, semi-sweet pastry often filled with lotus-seed paste or beans, and topped with a duck egg. Street vendors will offer great shopping on everything from plants to housewares and clothing to souvenirs. You’ll also find arts and crafts, and lots of other activities along the main festival route. This is a don’t-miss event for kids of all ages.
