The Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco is one of the oldest free festivals in the country, a celebration of musical diversity held each year since 1938 in a lovely outdoor setting. The former owner noticed the grove’s natural acoustics ad determined the site should be preserved as a park that the public could enjoy admission-free. The result is this great concert series that offers attendees a wide array of musical choices in a beautiful, natural scene.
It offers a cornucopia of sounds, from world music to hip-hop to the symphony. It was created when Rosalie Mayer Stern donated her land to the city of San Francisco in return for a promise of a free, annual music festival each year. The variety of performances is eclectic and appealing to a wide audience.
Fans pack the meadow for the concerts, arriving early in the morning to drop a blanket close to the stage for the afternoon show. In other words … Come early!
Location: 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard, San Francisco When: June-August, Sundays
