Sausalito
San Francisco
Location: North of the Golden Gate Bridge, on the south-eastern
tip of Marin County
Sausalito is often said to be reminiscent of the French Riviera, due in part to
the wonderful Mediterranean accents you’ll find in this town across the Golden Gate
Bridge. Situated on the water, this community is well worth a visit and all ages
are sure to enjoy the relaxed ambience of this artsy town, the pretty waterfront
area, and the eclectic shops and eateries that are found here.
Families should make a stop at the Bay Model Visitor Center, which boasts a 1.5-acre
working model of the Bay, capable of simulating tides, currents, and river inflows.
You’ll also want to visit the Bay Area Discovery Museum, especially if you’re traveling
with kids up to age 10. Here you’ll find dozens of hands-on exhibits in science,
the arts, and much more. There are a number of activities that can be enjoyed while
visiting Sausalito, including kayaking, sailing, fishing, wooden boat tours, and
dinner cruises. This area is also teeming with fine artists and the galleries here
are plentiful and wonderful to explore. Art festivals occur quite often during the
year. There’s also a local winery where visitors can explore the wine-making process.
