Hyde
Street Pier San Francisco
Location: Beach St at Polk St., San Francisco
Hyde Street Pier has longed played an important role in San Francisco’s maritime
history and families that love exploring ships and small watercraft will especially
enjoy a visit to this site. The pier is the home to 6 historic vessels of different
types and from different eras: the 1886 square-rigger Balcutha, 1895 schooner C.A.
Thayer, 1890 steam ferryboat Eureka, 1891 scow schooner Alma, 1907 steam tug Hercules,
and the 1914 paddlewheel tug, Eppleton Hall.
The pier, part of the San Francisco Maritime Park, is also home to more than 100
significant small craft and vessels which provide visitors with an introduction
to boatbuilding and facts about various maritime trades. The interpretive programs
at Hyde Street Pier are fun and informative and may include such activities as a
“singing tour” of one of the ships or a woodworking class. Many of the programs
are designed specifically for children.
