Japantown
San Francisco
Location: Geary Blvd. between Fillmore and Laguna St.,
San Francisco
Japantown, one of San Francisco’s many international neighborhoods, is home to more
than 12,000 residents of Japanese descent. While the area was at its finest prior
to World War II, visitors to the City by the Bay can still enjoy a number of interesting
sights here. Not a large neighborhood, it should take just a few hours to take in
all the attractions and make a few stops for shopping and dining.
Most make their way to Japantown to visit Japan Center, a five-acre complex of hotels,
shops, theaters, sushi bars and restaurants located at Post and Buchanan Streets.
You’ll recognize it by the five-tiered white pagoda which sits in the center of
the complex. You can purchase everything here from silk kimonos to tea to beautiful
Japanese arts and crafts. Be sure to taste the incredible seafood offered here,
especially the chowder served in a delectable sourdough bread bowl!
