Oakland Zoo is located in the middle of pretty Knowland Park, a 525-acre green oasis in the middle of the city of Oakland. The zoo is home to approximately 450 native and exotic animals. The setting here is really quite beautiful and the animals are arranged according to geographic regions or biomes.

Visitors of all ages can travel to Africa, Asia, and Australia without ever leaving the San Francisco area. There’s also a California 1820 area where guests can view animals from the early years of the West, when the state was undiscovered and undeveloped. At the onsite Valley Children’s Zoo, kids can view alligators, lemurs, tortoises, fruit bats, tarantulas, and otters, enjoy underwater viewing portals, interact with some of the animals, or jump around in the kid-friendly play areas located near the Children’s Zoo.

There’s also a sky ride that gives visitors a bird’s-eye view of the park.
