 Bay to Breakers Race

For almost a hundred years in a row, runners will scale the hilly streets of San Francisco in the annual, much-anticipated Bay to Breakers Race. The oldest consecutively run footrace in the world, runners will travel about seven-and-a-half miles through San Francisco in this race that was established in 1912.

Originally organized to boost the spirits of the city‘s residents after the devastation of the 1906 earthquake, approximately 70,000 - 80,000 racers now show up each year to run the challenging course. Participants often don silly costumes, adding to the gaiety of the event. People dressed as ""spawning salmon"" make the job of the racers even harder as they make their way in the opposite direction from finish to start.

Silliness is the true spirit of the weekend though runners certainly take the race seriously as they climb from the sea level Embarcadero to 215 feet above sea level and back again. After the race, there‘s also an open-air festival and concert called ""Footfest"" and the ""Greater Body Expo"", featuring programming and exhibits on health and fitness, continues all weekend.

Location: Embarcadero and the Great Highway
When: May
