Chinese New Year Festival and Parade

The Chinese New Year Festival and Parade promises to be a crowd-pleaser of monumental proportions. Chinatown, in downtown San Francisco, has long been a fantastic attraction for families who want to experience this thriving, dynamic culture and its attractions. This festival highlights the culture and traditions of the Chinese as a people.

The New Year is the most important holiday for Chinese families, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The New Year starts with the new moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day is called the Lantern Festival, which originated in ancient times as a way to usher in the increasing light and warmth of the sun after the winter’s cold. Whatever the background, this festival promises to delight all ages.

You’ll find a myriad of activities throughout the festival, including a flower market fair offering many New Year’s items for sale. A run/walk is a great way to celebrate the actual day on the 29th as you wind your way through scenic parts of San Francisco. Don’t miss the parade, considered one of the top in the world and the largest celebration of Asian culture outside of Asia. Highlights include elaborate decorated floats, marching bands, stilt walkers, dancers, acrobats and the 201 foot Golden Dragon. Bring the teens to this event and they’re sure to remember it for many (new) years to come.
