 Opening Day on the Bay

Opening Day on the Bay is a long-standing tradition that marks the beginning of boating season each year. Imagine a couple hundred boats, all festively attired, making their way across the bay in formation. It’s a sight that will surely take your breath away and lead to many “Mom! Look at that one!” exclamations from your teens.

As the fleet is blessed, you can explain the reason behind the ceremony—to ensure safe waters and good catches for all who venture onto the water each spring and summer. Yachting and sailing clubs from throughout Northern California participate, offering you a chance to see boats of all stripes and types.

Be on the lookout for a tall ship from Indonesia and smaller craft from right here in the Bay Area. No matter where a vessel hails from, it is sure to be decked out in

its grandest finery for this festive occasion. You don’t have to be a sailing expert or a boat aficionado to appreciate the bright colors and beautiful lines these boats bring to the party.
Location: Pier 39
