Cable
Car Museum San Francisco
Location: 1201 Mason St., San Francisco
A symbol of San Francisco, the cable car was invented
by Andrew Smith Hallidie in 1873. Their history is a fascinating fusion of technology,
politics, and passion. They were the awe of the town for about 30 years and were
almost destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. Politicians tried to do away with them
throughout the years, the town, however, stood by them and successfully counter
attacked.
Today, the Cable Car has been named a National Historic Landmark and written in the San Francisco’s City Charter. The Cable Car Museum denotes
the details of this history, teaches how they work, and displays several different
models. A must see for all those who want to be taken back to a different era.
