Muir
Woods San Francisco
Location: Part of the Golden Gate National Recreational
Area
Muir Woods National Monument is 12 miles north of San
Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Named for naturalist John Muir, this area
is home to ancient redwoods
more than 1,000 years old and 250 feet high. This spectacular
sight is a favorite place for tourists who hope to spend some quiet time away from
the hubbub of the city.
Besides being beautiful, the area is also quite educational,
with interpretive displays and special programs offered to visitors who make their
way here. There are also several hiking trails that wind through the trees, both
long and short, and many appropriate for visitors of all ages. The woods look a
bit different in each season and according to when you visit, you’ll be able to
view a myriad of wildlife creatures ranging from black-tail deer to chipmunks. The
onsite café serves cold drinks, frozen desserts, Starbucks coffee, sandwiches, and
hot dogs to hungry visitors and there’s also a gift shop on the premises.
